Solar Panel Maker Solyndra Scores $105M Deal with Italian Company

Solyndra Solar Panels - RetakeSolyndra, the California maker of thin-film photovoltaic cells (PV), has signed a supply agreement with Italian installer Sun System. Solyndra could make $105 million over the next few years from this deal, the company said in a statement.

Milan-based Sun System plans to install Solyndra’s solar cells, which Solyndra will manufacture at its Fremont and Milpitas, Calif. facilities, on commercial rooftops in sun-drenched southern Italy. Read More »

Applied Materials: Solar Segment Will Break Even in 2010

amat_logo_220wide.gifApplied Materials Inc., (AMAT), officials say that their solar business will break even in 2010 but plan layoffs of 1,300-1,500 jobs, or 12 percent of the workforce in the next 18 months.

The semiconductor-equipment and PV solar panel maker reported a fourth quarter profit of $138 million, or 10 cents per share, on net sales of $1.53 billion.

New orders in Applied Materials’ Energy and Environmental business were up significantly from Q3 to $357 million in Q4 but still off 27 percent from Q4 2008.

Operating loss in the segment spiked to $242 million for FY2009 from $183 million in FY 2008. The company expects to save $450 million when the restructuring is complete.

Total and GDF to team up on construction of solar cell plant

French oil and gas  supermajor Total and GDF Suez plan to jointly construct a 70 million euros ($89 million) solar cell plant in eastern France, near the German border that once operational could employ 100 workers.

In the solar sector Total and GDF  are partners in  Photovoltech, a crystalline-silicon cell manufacturer based in Tienen, Belgium. Each holds a 47.8% interest in the company.

Total also holds stake in U.S. organic photovoltaic developer Konarka and Swiss thin-film photovoltaic company Novacis.
