BrightSource Gets $1.37 bln DOE Loan Guarantee For Ivanpah Project, Whoa!

BrightSource Energy was offered a $1.37 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy on Monday, the largest such loan awarded by the DOE –see official press release here. The Oakland, Calif.-based company will use this crucial government backing to secure financing to support construction of its 440-megawatt Ivanpah Solar Power Complex, located in a six square miles (15.53 square kilometers) area on the Nevada side of the Mojave Desert, owned by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). DOE To Award Up To 15 Loan Guarantees Within Six Months

One of Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s early promises upon taking over at the Department of Energy a year ago was that he would speed up the award of the loan guarantees.

So far though only one loan guarantee has actually been funded. The guarantee was secured by Solyndra, the California maker of thin-film photovoltaic cells, which scored a $535 million in September that it will use in part to finance construction of a new manufacturing facility in California. Rentech, ClearFuels Secures $23M DOE Loan Guarantee for Biomass Project

Rentech, a developer of biomass gasification technology, has scored a $22.6million loan guarantee from the Department of Energy to support construction of a biomass gasifier at its Denver technology center. Rentech  jointly secured the funding with ClearFuels Technology, of which it owns a 25 percent stake. Read More »
