Nuclear Reactor Maker Areva Acquires Ausra

Areva, one of the world’s largest maker of nuclear reactors, has acquired Mountain View, Calif., -based solar-thermal equipment maker Ausra, which had been on the auction block, talking to potential buyers at least sine November.

eSolar Inks First Big CSP Deal in China

eSolar and Chinese-owned Penglai Electric announced over the weekend a licensing agreement to build 2 gigawatts of solar thermal power plants in China over 10 years. (Hat tip: earth2tech)

The project will be China’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) installation, with installation of the first 92 megawatts slated for 2010. Read More »

Solar Power Company Ausra on the Auction Block

Picture 1Solar power developer Ausra is in advance talks with as many as three potential buyers, Reuters reported on Friday, citing two sources inside the Mountain View, Calif., company.

The buyers could take a part or the whole solar power company. Reuters describes the interested candidates as “global conglomerates in the power generation business.”  We’ve reached to obvious suspects General Electric and Siemens. Both companies are largely focused on wind generation rather than solar power. So far we’ve not heard back from the two companies. Read More »

Chinese Solar Developer Acquires Silicon Valley Startup

China Solar Power (CSP), a Hong Kong-based maker of solar PV panels, founded by Charles Johnson, the former CEO of asset management company Templeton Worldwide, has acquired ThinSilicon, a maker of thin-film solar panels.

Mountain View, Calif.-based ThinSilicon, launched in 2007 by three Stanford University PhD candidates studying material sciences, has developed a process that boosts the efficiency of thin-film PV modules. Investors in ThinSilicon include FireLake Capital Management and Spring Ventures. CSP is owned by Hong Kong-based asset management firm Tano Capital.
