Update: Germany Wins Solar Decathlon, Germans Win…! [Video]
It’s official – Germany, land of the individual feed-in tariff, and one of the world’s largest generators of clean electricity, has won the U.S. Department of Energy‘s solar Decathlon that’s been going on over the past week on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
This is the second time Team Germany wins the competition, which closed yesterday. Two U.S. teams — Team Illinois, and Team California — took second and third place, respectively, reports CNN.com.
What put Germany on top? Judges said the German house was, out of the 20 teams competing, able to put the most energy back into the power grid. The team finished the week with 908 points, scoring a clean 150 points out of 150 possible points, in the net metering section. Second-place Illinois finished the decathlon with 897.3 points and Team California scored 863.089 points.
Team Alberta (our favorite, because it included GER’s childhood friend, University of Calgary urban planning student Johann Kyser) placed 6th, with their SolAbode home registering 769.41 points.
