OMERS Ventures, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System’s newly-launched venture fund, has hired a new managing director to oversee investments in technology  and cleantech upstarts.

Seasoned technology executive Howard Gwin has joined OMERS Ventures as a Toronto-based managing director.  Gwin, who previously worked as a senior executive at Peoplesoft as well as IBM and Xerox, will help lead OMERS Ventures’ investments in North American technology, media and telecommunications companies.

“Adding Howard to our team is a very big deal for OMERS Ventures. He is one of the best known and respected tech guys in Canada, and a hugely successful operator of many companies,” said John Ruffolo, CEO of OMERS Ventures, in a statement.

As previously reported by G.E.R., over the next three years OMERS Ventures aims to invest up to C$180 million ($171 million) in cleantech opportunities and media, telecommunications, and life sciences startups.
