Department of Energy awards stimulus money to fuel cell developers

The Department of Energy has awarded $41.9 million to 13 companies to develop and deploy fuel cells. The funds are part of the stimulus package that was recently signed into law.

Some of the grant winners include Sprint Nextel, which plans to use $7.3 million to test 1-10 kw fuel cell systems for backup power for emergency communications infrastructure. MTI MicroFuel Cells got $2.4 million to improve its product and cut costs. Jadoo Power landed $1.8 million to grow distribution for its ammonia borane-based fuel cells.

The other companies getting DOE stimulus monies are FedEx, PolyFuel, Anheuser-Busch, Nuvera Fuel Cells, Delphi, Plug Power, Genco, and Sysco. The 13 grant recipients are expected to contribute $72.4 million of their own funds to match the DOE grants.
